Lone Man was a Brulé Lakota leader. His wife was Walks As She Thinks Lakota . They were the parents of Red Cloud (Lakota: Maȟpíya Lúta) (1822 – December 10, 1909), a war leader and a chief of the Oglala Lakota.[1]
Story as told by the old Indians:
Lone Man (Chief Red Cloud's father) was a Bule Sioux. "Walks as she thinks," (Chief Red Cloud's mother) was an ogla'la Sioux and a sister to Ole Smoke, Crazy Horse's father. Lone Man died of drunkenness and it is said that his mother, "Walks as she thinks," died of a broken heart. Lone Man and "Walks as she thinks," the parents of Chief Red Cloud, died in 1825, three years after the birth of Chief Red Cloud in 1822. Aunts and Uncles took the nine children to raise after the death of the parents.
Red Cloud was taken to to live with Ole Smoke, Crazy Horse's father. Red Cloud and Crazy Horse were first cousins and they fought many battles together.
Red Cloud's known brothers were Sword, Yellow Lodge, and Spider. Little is known of the sisters except for one Blue Thunder (white man's name was Sarah Foster). She had a baby boy and when the Chief went to see the newborn, he asked that the boy be named Red Cloud after him. This she did, so this was John Red Cloud.[2]
